Is “The Ultimate Marked Deck” the best marked deck? The name and price would suggest so, given that its one of the more expensive marked decks, and this could mean money well spent, providing that the product and its name delivers on most, if not every level, compared to other marked decks.
But regardless of name or price, there are several fundamental elements that apply to any good marked deck. Its not just about how well the back design hides the marks indicating the suit and value. Its how quickly and accurately the performer can read those markings when talking to, looking at, and performing for an audience.
As any good hobbyist, amateur or professional magician (should) know, spectators will tend to look where the performer is looking, and if you are lingering too long trying to read the backs then……or if you look too quickly, and misread the marks then……the risks of detection and/or the effect not working as intended, increase considerably.
The markings on this deck are very well integrated into the bicycle back design. The suit numbers are not too hard to find, but the suit symbols are difficult to read quickly and accurately, even in good lighting conditions. You are going to have to spend more time looking at the suit markings to be sure.
This deck has been given more than a few endorsements from magicians regarding the back design, using terms such as: diabolically camouflaged, hard to detect, well disguised and so on, and this may well be where the deck’s strength and appeal lies.
The deck’s markings may escape detection or not arouse suspicion as quickly when performing more casually for your magic buddies at your next session or magic club meeting. (As they are often more interested in method than performance.) So when performing for magicians, the well integrated marks on the bicycle back design makes this deck an ideal one to use.
But performing for laypeople and having to concentrate more on presentation and audience management, may not give you the time needed to read the markings quickly and accurately. For this type of environment, given that there could also be a greater risk of cards getting wet, lost or damaged, then there are more suitable and cheaper marked decks available.
