If you love great close-up magic, now is the time take a trip on Carey’s Way.
John Carey’s close up magic road trip takes you on a journey of discovery and fun, as his diverse magical creative talents flow generously through this 184 page book containing over 80 effects.
These are explained clearly and economically in a fertile and refreshing approach, that enables him to strip each effect back to its core elements, producing new handlings and techniques that are as clear and direct in method to magicians, as the effect is direct, entertaining and magical to audiences in performance.
This results in effects that are not only commercial and practical, but also uncluttered and easier to learn and remember, whether you are a busy professional performer, or an Amateur/hobbyist not performing regularly in the crucible of live performances.
There is plenty of variety among the mainly card and coin routines. Popular and proven close up card magic themes are covered: cards across, card at any number, sandwich effects, ace and four of a kind productions, card revelations, card in matchbox, card vanishes, card(s) to pocket, cards to impossible location and thought of cards and so on. As well as gambling effects, 3 card monte, and poker deals, all of them given the Carey touch.
There are also variations on card classics such as Do as I do, Premonition, and The trick that cannot be explained. As well as tricks with everyday and copper/silver type coins. So there is something for everyone here.
Several of these themes are Variations of or inspired/popularised by some of the best in close up magic: Juan Tamariz, Larry Jennings, John Bannon, Doc Eason, Simon Aronson, Jay Sankey, Paul Harris, Ed Marlo and Dai Vernon. Which gives you a strong indicator of the calibre of the material.
Around (30%) of the effects are of the Mentalist prediction/intuition type with mainly cards but also coins, not only displaying the magicians mentalist skills, but there are several effects, which cleverly empower the spectator to amaze the other spectators by seemingly reading the magicians mind, and several of these are among the strongest effects in the book.
There are several effects that explore various clever approaches and applications using Magicians choice/Equivoque which are very useful, as well as several interesting and useable card forces.
For magicians who are looking for a real “Smoke and Mirrors” close up effect, and want to add one of the most audacious, clever, devious and powerful effects to their repertoire, try “51 Faces North North West” based on the almost mythical Stewart James card trick.
The spectator handles the cards, but John Carey’s premise, patter and presentation really sells the effect. I get the feeling that if Stewart James was still with us to read this, he may well have grinned and laughed out loud at the method as much as I did, it’s a real fooler!
184 pages over 80 effects, that’s less than $1 per trick! Great Value!
Packs small, plays big! Highly recommended.
